Tetracycline Hydrochloride is an inhibitor of bacterial ribosomes [1].

Tetracycline Hydrochloride is believed to inhibit translation by binding to the 16S rRNA and inhibiting the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex. However, the exact target site(s) and mechanism(s) of action remain subjects of much debate [1].

Tetracycline Hydrochloride at doses of 0, 10, 25, 50, 75, 150, 225 and 300 μM exhibited increasing antimicrobial effect against resistant strains ofStaphylococcus aureus(S. aureus). The statistically evaluated IC50 values of Tetracycline Hydrochloride againstS. aureus, cadmium-resistantS. aureus, and lead-resistantS. aureusafter first 6 h were 4.8, 3.8, 2.2 μM, respectively [2].

In humans who had minimumPropionibacterium acnes(P. acnes) levels of 10000 colony-forming units per cm2at baseline, Tetracycline Hydrochloride treatment (1000 mg/d, b.i.d., p.o.) over a 6-week period significantly reducedP. acneson both cheeks and forehead after 3 and 6 weeks, but produced little to no residual effect. At 9 weeks,P. acneslevels in the Tetracycline Hydrochloride group had returned to baseline [3].
