Caspase-1 belongs to the caspase-family of cysteine proteases. Caspase-1 exists in cells as an inactive proenzyme. The molecular mass of the proenzyme is 45 kDa. Caspase-1 is expressed as a zymogen that is cleaved into p20 (20 kDa) and p10 (10 kDa) subunits that become part of the active enzyme. Caspase-1 has been revealed to induce cell necrosis or pyroptosis. The studies implicated caspase-1 in promoting CD4 T-cell death and inflammation by HIV, two signature events that fuel HIV disease progression to AIDS.
