Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a synthetic phenolic product and a widely used antioxidant.
BHT inhibits the proliferation of mouse testicular interstitial Leydig cells (TM3) and arrests the cell cycle. It disrupts the cytoplasm and mitochondrial cartilage calcium homeostasis. BHT also causes endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and DNA breaks[1].
In female mice, BHT causes significant fibrotic areas and proliferative AEC in the lungs. And it changes the distal lung parenchymal signals involved in pulmonary fibrosis, which has certain similarities with human IPF in the pathway involving Col V[2].
