Interleukin 3 (IL-3) is a pleiotropic cytokine produced by activated T cells, mast cells and eosinophils, and stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of pluripotent hematopoietic stem cells, committed progenitor cells of the megakaryocyte, granulocyte-macrophage, erythroid, eosinophil, basophil and mast cell lineages. Also, IL-3 affects the functional activity of basophils, eosinophils, mature mast cells and macrophages. IL-3 enhances thrombopoiesis, phagocytosis, and antibody-mediated cellular cytotoxicity.
The human IL-3 cDNA encodes a 152 aa protein. Human and mouse IL-3 share only 29% sequence identity at the amino acid level. IL-3 is highly species-specific and human IL-3 does not show activity on murine cells. Recombinant human IL-3 is a 15.0 kDa protein containing 133 amino acid residues.
