Maropitan (CJ11972; CJ11972) is a novel, potent, selective and orally bioactive antagonist of neurokinin (NK1) receptor. Maropitant acts by blocking the binding of substance P within the emetic center and the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CRTZ). Maropitant is highly effective in preventing vomiting and was developed by Zoetis specifically for the treatment of motion sickness and vomiting in dogs. It was approved by the FDA in 2007 for use in dogs, and more recently has also been approved for use in cats.
