Betulin is a naturally occurring triterpene commonly extracted from the bark of birch trees. It can be converted to betulinic acid (the alcohol group replaced by a carboxylic acid group), which is biologically more active than betulin itself. Betulin has been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory activity and may be useful for the treatment of renal carcinoma and auto-immune disorders. References: Ci X, Zhou J, Lv H, Yu Q, Peng L, Hua S. Betulin exhibits anti-inflammatory activity in LPS-stimulated macrophages and endotoxin-shocked mice through an AMPK/AKT/Nrf2-dependent mechanism.
