Ly93 is a selective and orally active inhibitor of sphingomyelin synthase 2 (SMS2) (IC50: 91 nM).

Ly93 (100 mg/kg, i.g. once daily for 7 days) obviously reduces the plasma SM levels of C57BL/6J mice. In apolipoprotein E gene knockout mice, Ly93 dose-dependently decreases the atherosclerotic lesions in the root and the entire aorta as well as macrophage content in lesions.
