Calcium 2-oxoglutarate is an intermediate in the production of GTP or ATP in the Krebs cycle. It is a reversible inhibitor of tyrosinase (IC50: 15 mM).

Calcium 2-oxoglutarate has some physiological capabilities including reduction of ammonia level formed in the lung and general ammonia detoxification, neuroprotective effect against cyanide poisoning, and protective role against lipid peroxidation [1].
